What started in 1903 as a race intended to raise the circulation of a newspaper L'Auto evolved into what is arguably the race considered to be the toughest and the pinnacle of professional racing. The Tour de France takes its riders across the tough terrain in the mountainous French Alps and the Pyrennes. It is a three week tour with various stages which add up to 3500 kms.
